During the recent Vans / Guttermouth Tour, TBC opened its house for a bit of a Mexican fiesta, some live music and skate jam.

Australias best shredettes will be travelling from all over the country to Prahan Skatepark for the Just Another Female Skateboarding Competition #4. tomorrow to battle it out for over $3000 in cash and prizes.

JAFSC is created by female skateboarders for female skateboarders, it is the only professional skateboarding event of it’s kind within Australia. In a push for the ladies skate scene in our country to gain recognition and to grow the event is open only to Australian and New Zealand contestants.

Bright Things TV is very excited to be sponsoring 3 of the mini comps and we’ll be there filming all the action and handing out some merch to you Krazy Kids.

Congratulations to 11 Year Old Poppy Olsen who took out the girls division at Hurly’s ABC Bowriders comp over the weekend! Boom!

…After a triumphant day of battle at one of the country’s most progressive skateparks, Bar Beach-Empire Park Skate Park in Newcastle, Victoria’s Renton Millar skates away as the first ever Pro winner of The inaugural Hurley Australian Bowl-Riding Championships (ABC™), whilst Mik Mulhall took out the Masters title. A strong lineup of competitors made it hard for the World Cup Skateboarding judges to rank each of the heats and identify the lucky winner of each division, their share of the prize pool of $20,000 in cash and prizes. A truly spectacular moment of the competition included watching 11-year old Poppy Olsen take out the females division. One of the main features of the Hurley ABC™ is that it offered the opportunity for Australian rippers to compete at Vans Bowl-A-Rama™ Bondi, the biggest professional skateboarding competition in the Southern Hemisphere, by giving away a series of wild cards. Ok so this month i was asked to pick my favourite boots for Fall and being a stud/spike/huge heel enthusiast i was naturally going to take it to the dark side.

After hours of trawling the web i settled on these little beauties.

I also accidentally fell in love/lust/an unhealthy obsession with Swan Blanc Shoes.

The outcome is i now own the most amazing pair of boots! Yay!

Hurley ABC – Paving the way for Australia’s skateboarding talent

For the first time ever, the Australian skateboarding community is presented with the chance to compete in a true ‘Nationals’ skateboarding competition – The Hurley Australian Bowl-riding Championships (ABC™), January 26th-28th 2012. Taking place at one of the countries most progressive skateparks, Bar Beach-Empire Park Skate Park in Newcastle, the event will host an array of Australia’s best talent from the bowl riding community including world-vert champion Renton Millar, Professional Skateboarder and T.V personality Corbin Harris and Adrian Jones, pioneer of Australian skateboarding and true legend of the sport.

Presented by Hurley and sanctioned by World Cup Skateboarding (WCS), the all-inclusive Australian event welcomes skateboarders from every skill level and ages, to sign up and compete for a total prize pool of $20,000 in cash and prizes; across one of its four divisions: Dew Am Jam U18’s, Pro/Am, Masters (over 40’s) and a female open division.

“Australia’s bowl skating scene just got way way better,” comments Renton Millar. “Potentially an unknown skater from the middle of nowhere could come up through the system and end up skating against Pedro Barros, Bucky Lasek, or Rune Glifberg. That’s an opportunity that has not happened in Australia, and I think it’s going to be an amazing experience for young skaters and great for the scene.”

“This competition will showcase some of the best talent we have here in Australia and give them the chance to gain wildcard entry to compete alongside International heavy weights such as Steve Caballero at VANS BOWL-A-RAMA™ Bondi in February,” comments Co-Founder Chad Ford.

Three Dew Am Jam Under 18’s competitors will be chosen to showcase their talent in the Dew Am Jam at Vans BOWL-A-RAMA™ Bondi and five pro and five masters competitors will also be given the opportunity to qualify to ride alongside industry greats within their divisions on February 25th at Bondi Bowl.

Ford, also Co-Founder of BOWL-A-RAMA™ one of the biggest and most successful professional bowl series in Australasia, has been instrumental in catering to the growth of skateboarding within Australia. “We are offering the Australian skateboarding community a platform to pursue their passion and launch their career at a grass-roots level and we’re excited to be doing this with Hurley,” he adds.

“ABC™ gives skaters a path. Kids used to look at pro contests and there was no actual way for them to get into contests like BOWL-A-RAMA™ besides being invited, or being entered as a pro. Now there is a system and skaters can learn the trade skating on a lower level in Australia before turning pro,” agrees Renton Millar, who has been working with Mt Dew to identify and support up and coming skaters over the last four years.

Officially kicking off on the Thursday with learn to ride skate clinics provided by Kman skate school, Hurley ABC™ will provide a range of entertainment to celebrate the competition including art and music events.

Last year the Victoria Police were given powers to issue on-the-spot fines of up to $240 to punish people caught using language deemed to be indecent, disorderly, offensive or threatening.
The move, part of the government’s extensive law-and-order agenda, has outraged civil libertarians, who accuse the Coalition of eroding fundamental rights such as freedom of speech, and of granting police excessive powers to make value judgments about decency and morality.

Shelter: an Axe Distribution Skate Trip to Ireland

In October 2011 Axe Distribution took 14 skaters and 1 filmmaker on a trip to Ireland hoping to skate a bunch of street spots they’d been scoping for a while. However once the crew arrived in Dublin the weather conspired against them and the whole trip threatened to be rained off. This movie is basically the opposite to what the crew had planned, it’s about finding shelter from the weather and skating wherever you can.

The whole film was shot on DSLR with one 50mm and it was the filmmakers first attempt at a skateboard movie. The crew involved in the production are basically all am’s who are all on a trip to skate new places and meet new people. For the duration of the film the skaters were rarely aware when they were being filmed, it’s a point and shoot movie where hopefully some good skating has been captured.
